چکیده
Gas-filled temporary tissue expanders (TTEs), implanted to assist in post mastectomy breast reconstructions, are expected produce increased dosimetric uncertainty radiotherapy treatments, due their containing both a substantial metallic component and comparatively large volume of gas. This study therefore builds on previous investigations the effects gas-filled TTEs static photon electron beams, by examining these implants dose distributions from common modulated rotational treatment techniques; volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) helical tomotherapy (HT). Radiochromic film measurements were used evaluate accuracy VMAT HT calculations, for humanoid phantom augmented with sample Aeroform CO2-filled TTE (AirXpanders Inc, San Jose, USA) as well purpose-designed 3D printed tissue. Results showed that TomoTherapy Hi-Art VoLO convolution-superposition algorithm (Accuray Sunnyvale, produced accurate calculations within this complex phantom, including immediately anterior posterior TTE. The Varian Eclipse Acuros (AXB) generally better agreement measurement than AAA (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, USA), although regions 5% 10% disagreement AXB dosimetrically-challenging region side implant. Although has obvious downstream beam, results how inverse-planning treatments can fluence compensate dramatic density heterogeneities Despite some disagreements planned dose, all use inverse-planned beams resulted homogeneous coverage target, patient-like Due importance matching each distribution TTE, careful available imaging techniques is advisable, when delivered patients TTEs.

Impact of internal metallic ports in temporary tissue expanders on postmastectomy radiation dose distribution.
PURPOSE Temporary tissue expanders (TTE) with an internal magnetic metal port (IMP) have been increasingly used for breast reconstruction in post-mastectomy patients who receive radiation therapy (XRT). We evaluated XRT plans of patients with IMP to determine its effect on XRT dose distribution. METHODS AND MATERIALS Original treatment plans with CT simulation scans of 24 consecutive patients...
متن کاملPhoton beam dose distributions for patients with implanted temporary tissue expanders
This study examines the effects of temporary tissue expanders (TTEs) on the dose distributions of photon beams in breast cancer radiotherapy treatments. EBT2 radiochromic film and ion chamber measurements were taken to quantify the attenuation and backscatter effects of the inhomogeneity. Results illustrate that the internal magnetic port present in a tissue expander causes a dose reduction of ...
متن کاملUse of saline-filled tissue expanders to protect the small bowel from radiation.
Over the past 7 years, 58 saline-filled tissues expanders (TEs) have been temporarily placed in 57 patients. The indications for TE placement were: small bowel exclusion from external-beam radiation therapy (N = 25), interstitial RT (N = 16), or both (N = 13) when there was insufficient omentum to provide adequate exclusion. Of the 57 patients, 24 had primary tumors (4 colon, 4 endometrial, and...
متن کاملInvestigation of the effects of a carbon-fiber tabletop on the surface dose and attenuation dose for megavoltage photon beams
Background: Multiple beams are generally used with an increased possibility that the beam axis intersects the treatment table. Treatment tabletops are commonly made of carbon fiber due to its high mechanical strength and rigidity, low specific density, extremely light and low radiation beam attenuation properties. Purpose of this paper is investigated the dose changes in the buildup region and ...
متن کاملAbstract: Radiation of the Breast: Optimization of Treatment Planning with a Gas-Filled Tissue Expander
INTRODUCTION: External beam radiation in the mantle field has been a mainstay of therapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma for several decades. While the incidence of breast cancer in patients treated with mantle radiation is known to be elevated and mastectomy is often indicated, little has been reported regarding the outcomes of breast reconstruction in this high-risk group. The current study presents t...
